This picture was taken last Sunday at a workshop. The workshop was quite a disappointment as it did meet my expectation. I wouldn't say I did not learn anything but I expected more. Anyway I don't want to talk about it here. So I have shot so many pictures of Izabella, our model and I have done some post production work on it. The techniques used here include local contrast, blending and layer masking. My aim here is to create the painterly illustrated look using Photoshop. Thanks for viewing.

Last Sunday, I attended a studio lighting workshop conducted by Jeff Chen. It was a full day workshop which covered the fundamental in lighting, model shoot and post production. It was a very enriching experience for me. It was also the first time I worked in a professional studio and Jeff was really nice and unreservedly shared with us his knowledge gained in his work as a commercial photographer. I found the workshop quite intimidating initially as I'm not very technically inclined but Jeff made it easy for us to follow. Overall I had a great time and it was money well spent.

I can't believe it is already June! 2010 is flying by and I think it's about time to blog a bit about my life so far. I always get queried by my concerned colleagues at work on how an eligible bachelor like me spends his weekend. Well, sorry to disappoint but I don't live an exciting, swinging single lifestyle like some of my single friends. My weekends are usually spent doing mundane stuff like going to gym, watching a movie or just staying at home with my remote. Recently, I took up a course on practical photography and I have been attending classes on every Sunday. I like it so much, I think I'll just sign up for the portraiture class next month. So, the past few weekends had been interesting and fun for me.

I'm also looking forward to the day the iPad will be launched in Singapore. I had played with the iPad that my brother's girlfriend brought back from the States. I am so impressed with it I really want to own one. Right now, I spend a lot my time browsing the web on my iPhone but the tiny screen is just not ideal for reading much. So the bigger screen of the iPad would be more pleasant for browsing the web and is just great for editing photos using the awesome photography software I have downloaded from the App Store. Well, it is just one more month to go before it arrives here.

Have you ever tried to make a cartoon drawing on the iPhone? I have tried and I will admit that I am not very talented in that area. So I was very excited to download an app that can creates cartoon drawing easily with your own photos. It is called ToonPaint. It is so simple to use, just take a photo from your photo library and it will magically create a black and white cartoonish drawing for you. You can then add in colours or fine tune the drawing with the brush settings. Here are some sample of my work.

Practical Lesson

Yesterday was the fourth lesson of my practical photography course. We were at Merlion Park for our night photography shoot. I really enjoyed the lesson and I generally like the way the course has been conducted. I like that we have more outdoor shoot rather than just sitting in class listening to boring lecture. I also love the mini critique sessions at the end of the shoot when our instructor commented on our shots. I feel I have learned a lot and I am more confidence in my photography skill.

The Marina Bay Sands is the latest iconic structure that has captured my fascination for a while now. I have photographed this futuristic looking buildings on several occasions and I never get tired of it. Today, I went to the Merlion Park and waited for the sun to set over Marina Bay Sands. The park was crowded with tourists when I got there but the atmosphere was rather like that of a carnival. I like the feeling and I sat on the stone bench overlooking the Esplanade enjoying the balmy sea breeze while waiting for the sun to go down. Here are some pictures to share. Yesterday my friends and I had gone on a photo taking session at the Henderson Wave. It was my first time walking on the Wave bridge. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay too long due to a sudden change of weather. While we were shooting on the bridge, dark clouds started to roll in and the sky turned ominously dark in a matter of seconds. So we had to leave and took shelter at the bus stop. Today, I had the chance to visit the zoo with some friends. It had been a long time since I last visited the zoo. I also took the opportunity to test drive my newly bought DSLR. We had a great time there and I really think that we do have the best Zoo in the world. Dressing Up LX3

Last weekend, I was surfing the web looking for accessories to dress up my LX3 and I came upon this Raynox MSN-202 which was highly recommended by some users. The Raynox MSN-202 is a macro conversion lens for LX3. Although the LX3 has a macro mode, which I hardly use, this conversion lens is supposed to increase the magnification by 5 times. I decided that I should do something fun with my LX3 and so I bought one from a local online camera shop. I ordered the special package that came with a adapter tube for LX3, a lens cap and a flash diffuser. All these for S$160.00.

Here are some sample shots I took with my new lens. I have not tried out the lens outdoor yet. These were shot around my house. Stay tuned for more.

FSO: Canon Fashion Photography Forum

Yesterday, I attended the Canon FSO Fashion Photography Forum at SPH News Centre auditorium at Toa Payoh North. It cost $5.00 to register and all the money collected will go to The Strait Times School Pocket Money Fund. So, I guess, it was for a good cause too. The theme of the forum was about learning tricks and tips of fashion photography from two award winning local photographers, Desmond Foo and WaiTeik.

Both speakers provided a very candid insight on how they managed their workflow and the creativity aspect of their trade. I particularly enjoyed WaiTeik's session as he talked us through the process of creating some of his award winning works. I think it was the highlight of the forum. To me, both speakers are really a source of inspiration for people who are keen in pursuing fashion photography professionally.

I left the forum highly inspired and in a state of optimism but, alas, it was a short lived one, when I looked at my tiny LX3... Oh well..maybe it is time to upgrade. One last thing, I thought the MC was one horny guy whose idea of fashion photography was to get the numbers of the model. I didn't find his humour funny at all. Blah.

Today, as I was walking to the hawker centre at my workplace, I noticed there were many bicycles parked illegally around the estate. I didn't realize there were so many and some of them looked really worn out. Funny how I never noticed them before. My colleague then remarked that we should all go cycling at East Coast Park. Well, to be honest, I'm really not big on bicycle. I cant even remember when was the last time I rode a bicycle. Oh wait, does riding on a stationary bike at the gym counts? :)

Beginning of Darkenss

I seem to be taking a lot of photos with my Hipstamatic 110 nowadays. I am always surprise by the results,which can be rather unpredictable at times. My favourite combination is John S lens and Kodak Verichrome film. Yesterday, I purchased the Shibuya Hipstapak and I did a few test shots. I really like the retro effects of the film. I will post some Shibuya sample soon. Stay tuned. Here are some photos I shot at Chinatown last week around evening time.

Mosaic Camera

Mosaic Camera by Japanese developer Mitsuhara Emoto is an easy-to-use photography app that allows you to create artistic montage of images either by using the built-in camera or from your photo library. The interface of the app is very simple indeed. It consists of "borderlines" that form a grid on your image. The idea is that you press on the part of the image you want to capture and it will appear on the grid. You can capture different images until you form a montage. So it depends on your creativity. You can also pre-save the image before you capture the next one. This app is $1.99 for the full version. There is also a Lite version for free.

The "-" and "+" icons allow you to add or delete the borderlines. The icons also change colour depending on the orientation of your screen. The blue colour is for portrait mode and it changes to red when it is in landscape mode. I really enjoy playing with this app and I find I can be more creative when compositing the montage using the built-in camera.

As much as I like this app, there are some issues I have encountered. I find that it is not very stable when using images from the photo library. I have experienced crashes often when I was about to complete my work of art. It is maddening having to start all over again. Another major problem is, on my iPhone 3G, it can only save in 320 x 426 pixels even though I have specified to save at the maximum resolution. It is annoying because I had bought the full version just so I can save my artwork in high resolution. I think this problem alone render this app rather useless. It is a shame. I hope the developer will look into this issue and rectified it soon.

Update: After I wrote this review, I sent an email to the developer regarding the issues I have encountered and he told me that the next update would resolve the problems. :)

Hipstamatic 110

I love photography so it is no surprise that my iPhone is chockfull of applications that has something to do with it one way or another. My current favourite photography app has got to be Hipstamatic 110. This application simulates the look and feel of the Hipstamatic camera that was popular in the 80s. I must admit I have never heard or used one but I was able to gather some information from their website. It was only sold in the US and only 157 pieces were manufactured. There is a bit of tragic story about the makers of this camera and if you are interested you can read it here.

The app is $1.99 and comes with a standard camera kit which includes the John S and Jimmy Lenses, Ina's 69 and Kodak Verichrome Film, and standard flash. There are also 3 additional HipstaPack at $0.99 each which you can purchase from within the app. These will give you more lenses and film options.

What I love about this app is the very cute interface complete with the plastic body and tiny viewfinder. The picture taken with this camera is very quirky and has a vintage look to it. You can combine different lenses and films with unexpected results.

This is the front of the plastic body with the John S lens. You can change lenses by swiping left and right. At the bottom are icons to access the film rolls, flash, information of the lens in used, in-app purchase and the last icon is for flipping the camera to the back when you are ready to take a picture.

This is the back of the camera with the tiny viewfinder. You can set the accuracy of the viewfinder from the Settings menu. There is a Classic and Precision Framing mode. The Classic mode is rather unpredictable and you can get out of frame image which can be irritating. So stick with the Precision Framing mode if you want more precise framing. The huge yellow dot is the shutter release button. Below the viewfinder is the option to turn on the flash, complete with humming sound. Really fun. You can preview your pictures by clicking on the postage icon. You can also post directly to your Facebook account or email the picture.

Clicking on the Film roll icon lets you select the films installed on the camera. By default you have 3 rolls of film to play with.

You have a choice to use different type flashes and filters like RedEye Gel, Cadel Blue Gel, and Laser Lemon gel. All depends on which Hipstapack you have installed.

Without a doubt, this is the most fun camera app I have ever used. At times it feels silly when composing with the small viewfinder. But the results of the picture taken with this app is so quirky, beautiful and like a piece of art. So far, I have not experienced any crashes with this app so it is pretty stable. The only complaint I have is that it takes about 5 seconds to process each shot in high-quality mode. You need to be patience or it can be frustrating. I also wish it has a self-timer and the ability to save the original image.

Hello 2010

Well, today is officially the first day of a brand new year and yet I'm not feeling terribly excited about it. I woke up late this morning and half wondered if I should make my New Year's resolutions. I pondered for a while and decided that I have too many unfinished business carried over from last year. I don't think I want to stress myself to resolve them this year. It is too complicated. So I didn't make any resolutions for this year.

Anyway, I went out with my friend yesterday, armed with our cameras and iPhone to capture the last day of 2009. It turned out the weather was really bad. The sky was gloomy and drizzling for most part of the day. We ended up at the coffee shop and chatted for a good 2 hours. When the sky got dark, we went to the Esplanade for the Countdown Party. The Esplanade was packed to the brim, like, half the population was there to watch the fireworks display. People just kept pouring into the park, and jam packed the waterfront it was difficult to find a good spot. I hate crowds so we didn't stay too long. Here are some photos I took from yesterday.
